Magnetic Attraction
A laser printer uses direct electrostatic printing to deliver charged toner particles to a piece of paper. The toner particles are told where to go on the paper by magnetic attraction as they move from the toner hopper to the drum where the image is processed. As the drum rotates, the charged toner particles are attracted to the paper.
Shake it or Bake it?
At this point, if you were to shake the paper, all of the toner would fall off the paper. To keep the toner on the paper, the toner is "fused" to the paper by using an infrared heat source. This is one reason why the paper is warm when the printed page exits the printer.
A Recipe For Success
Toner is manufactured using a precise proportion of ingredients. Each manufacturer (and often each model of printer) requires a different blend. Typically, toner is a polymer made from plastic -- either styrene or a combination of part styrene and acrylic -- and pigments to color the toner.
The ingredients are combined using hot and cold rollers to produce resin-like material. From this point, the toner is ground into smaller particles - first into pellets and then micronized into a a fine powder. Extensive testing determines which additional additives are needed to adjust the magnetic characteristics, thermal properties, the melting point, and the flow rate of the toner.

The correct preparation affects shape, size, size distribution, charge and surface treatment. What about magnetic properties, charge-to-mass ratios, thermal properties, electrodynamic and electrostatic forces, particle size, and particle composition? Too much or not enough of any characteristic severely affects the ability of the printer to print. That's why we make over one hundred different formulations of toner.
